The key to immunity lies in your gut

How Your Gut Microbiome Supports Your Immune System

Well now… did you know that nearly 70% of your immune system is actually in your gut? That’s right—your gut microbiome isn’t just about digesting food. It plays a massive role in defending your body against illness. If you’re looking to boost your immune health, supporting your gut is a great place to start.

Let's explore how your gut microbiome is linked to immunity and what you can do to keep this important defence system strong.

The gut-immune connection

The gut-immune connection is a powerful one. Your gut microbiome is home to trillions of microbes, and every day, these tiny organisms are in constant communication with your immune system. They help your body identify harmful invaders, produce antibodies, and maintain the balance of good and bad bacteria. Essentially, your microbiome acts as your immune system’s right-hand helper, ensuring that your body knows how to respond when it encounters potential threats.

How does your microbiome support immunity?

So, how does a balanced microbiome support immunity? When the bacteria in your gut are in harmony, they work together to create a strong barrier that prevents harmful pathogens from entering the body. This balance helps to keep inflammation under control and allows your immune system to focus on fighting off actual invaders rather than getting overwhelmed. But when your microbiome is out of balance—when the bad bacteria outnumber the good—this can weaken your immune response. You may become more susceptible to infections and even chronic inflammation as your body struggles to cope with the imbalance.

How to support your microbiome

Now, let’s talk about how to support your microbiome to keep your immune system strong. Start by nourishing your gut with plenty of fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fibre is essential for feeding the good bacteria in your gut and promoting a diverse microbiome.

Probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt and kefir, along with prebiotics like garlic and onions, also help create an environment where beneficial bacteria can thrive.

Staying active is another simple yet powerful way to support your gut. Regular exercise helps keep your microbiome balanced and enhances immune function.

And don’t underestimate the power of stress management. Chronic stress can disrupt your microbiome and weaken your immune defences, so finding ways to relax—whether it’s deep breathing, meditation, or a stroll outside—can make a big difference.

Remember, taking care of your gut isn’t just about gut health. It’s about building a resilient immune system and supporting your overall wellness.

A healthy gut is your body’s first line of defence, so give it the support it deserves!

For more tips on how to boost your immunity and nurture your gut microbiome, check out my books, WELL NOW: Reclaim Your Life from Ulcerative Colitis or Get WELL NOW: Heal Your Gut to Transform Your Life. (Note - these books are the same except for the fact that Get WELL NOW is more focused on general gut health, and WELL NOW is specific to IBD management - you do NOT need both - but you do need one. They also make for great Xmas gifts. Too soon? :)
