Signs Your Gut Needs Healing: What to Look for and How to Support Recovery

Writer: Jacki McEwen-PowellJacki McEwen-Powell

Well now… if you’ve been experiencing unexplained symptoms like bloating, fatigue, or skin issues, your gut might be sending you a message. Often, our gut health affects far more than just digestion, playing a central role in everything from immunity to mental clarity. Recognising when your gut needs support is the first step toward healing—and feeling better overall.

SIGNS YOUR GUT NEEDS HEALING

Here’s what to watch for and how to begin your healing journey.

Persistent Digestive Discomfort

Bloating, gas, diarrhoea, and constipation can be some of the first signs that your gut might be off balance. Occasional discomfort is normal, but when it’s persistent, it often indicates an underlying issue, like an imbalanced microbiome or inflammation.

First Steps to Support: Focus on fibre-rich foods that are gentle on the gut, like cooked vegetables, oats, and bananas. Add in small amounts of probiotic-rich foods (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut) to begin replenishing beneficial bacteria.

Food Sensitivities

If you’re noticing that certain foods seem to leave you feeling unwell, this could be a sign that your gut lining is compromised. A weakened gut lining can allow food particles to “leak” into the bloodstream, triggering sensitivities.

First Steps to Support: Consider removing or reducing potential triggers, like dairy, gluten, or processed foods, while focusing on healing foods like bone broth and collagen-rich meals that support the gut lining.

Low Energy and Fatigue

When your gut isn’t absorbing nutrients effectively, it can leave you feeling drained. If you’re struggling with low energy despite adequate sleep, it might be time to look at your gut health.

First Steps to Support: Try adding foods that are easy to digest but high in nutrients, such as cooked leafy greens, eggs, and sweet potatoes. Staying hydrated also supports nutrient absorption and can reduce feelings of sluggishness.

Skin Issues

Skin problems like acne, eczema, or psoriasis can be a reflection of what’s going on in your gut. When the gut is inflamed, it can release toxins into the bloodstream that manifest through the skin.

First Steps to Support: Focus on anti-inflammatory foods like salmon, turmeric, and blueberries. Limiting processed foods and added sugars can also give your skin a break while supporting a balanced gut microbiome.

Mood Swings and Mental Fog

The gut-brain connection is powerful, with about 90% of serotonin (a mood-regulating neurotransmitter) produced in the gut. If your gut health is off, it can directly impact your mood and mental clarity.

First Steps to Support: Incorporate stress-reducing practices, such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga. Foods rich in magnesium, like pumpkin seeds and avocados, can also support a calmer mind.

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, your gut may need some support—but remember, it’s a journey. Simple dietary adjustments, hydration, stress management, and including more whole, nourishing foods can lead to gradual, sustainable healing.

In my books, Well Now: Reclaim Your Life from Ulcerative Colitis and Get WELL NOW: Heal Your Gut to Transform Your Life, I provide practical steps to restore balance and support long-term gut health. Remember, healing doesn’t happen overnight, but each small step you take brings you closer to feeling your best.
